STMicroelectronics STA333IS - The Tiny Digital Chip Delivers Up To 20 W Audio Output

STMicrosystem's new stereo digital audio amplifier

STMicroelectronics has announced the STA333IS system-on-chip that measures just 2.57 mm x 3.24mm and yet delivers up to 2x20W of audio output power for use in space-constrained LCD and LED televisions, docking stations, and digital wireless speaker systems.

With is wide operating voltage range of 4.5 V to 18 V, the device is also suitable for battery-operated equipment. The chip is the most power dense single-chip digital audio system available today and has become the part of ST's SoundTerminal family - known for advance process and chip-scale package technologies with digital audio IP such as FFX full flexible amplification.

STA claims that the STA333IS is unique in the markets since ST is the only company to have IP aka Intellectual Property to combine advance digital signal processing and power circuitry on a single on-board chip. Its power section consists of four independent half-bridge stages. Two channels can be provided by two full bridges capable of delivering up to 10 W + 10 W of power.

The STA333IS delivers superb audio quality that goes hand in hand with outstanding thermal efficiency and low electromagnetic emissions, and the tiny 8.3 sq.mm footprint gives extra freedom to style new generations of audio products. The company says that the STA333SML varient of the chip operates without external microcontroller and enables the designers to create digital amplifiers at the lowest costs.

The serial-audio-data input interface accepts all possible formats, including I2S. In addition to a 96-kHz internal-processing sampling rate with 24-bit precision, the STA333IS offers a 100-dB dynamic range and 100-dB signal-to-noise ratio (ternary PWM mode). Digital gain is adjustable from –80 dB to +48 dB in 0.5-dB steps, and input sampling rates are selectable from 32 kHz to 192 kHz.
