Mercedes Unveils Solar-Powered "VISION" Golf Cart Concept

Mercedes-Benz has revealed a concept of what it bills as the “ultimate golf cart” as part of activities at this year’s British Open at the Muirfield Golf Club in Scotland. 

The Mercedes-Benz Vision Golf Cart concept comes when earlier this year, they called upon golf and automobile fans from around the world to submit their ideas for a Mercedes-Benz golf cart of the future. The Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center in Carlsbad, California then took the most popular ideas and requirements and combines the aspects of Mercedes-Benz vehicles with the functionality of a golf cart. For example the diamond grille that is used on Mercedes-Benz cars was incorporated to give the cart a modern face that is unmistakably a Mercedes-Benz. 

The golf cart is powered by an electric motor that gets its energy from a battery that is kept continuously charged by a solar module integrated into the roof. The vehicle is controlled by a joystick instead of a steering wheel, mounted on the center console, which makes it easy for both passengers drive the golf cart.

"I was very inspired by the idea of designing a golf cart, giving it a new shape and new sorts of meaning," says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG. "Why not treating a golf cart like a car, and making it a 'Golf Car'."

Other features that golfers are certain to appreciate include a small refrigerator, heated/cooled cup holders, a floodlight function on the LED headlamps for night play, and an illuminated vanity mirror. A "fore button" also notifies other course users of a misplaced shot.

The Vision Golf Cart features a center console that has a multimedia panel that includes a rotatable docking station for an iPad or iPhone and a USB interface, cart occupants can send emails, place food and beverage orders with the country club, view weather information, and share their scores, photos and other game info via social media. The cart also includes Bluetooth connectivity for making calls over the loudspeaker system. When the cart is parked, the head-up display can be used to view course layout, game information and weather. The multimedia panel can control the air-conditioning system, the head-up display, the music system or communication with the clubhouse and other golf carts.

Other cool features include a retractable lightning rod for added safety in case it starts to rain and a windscreen can be darkened at the touch of a button. The seats are also heated and ventilated in addition to the neck-level heating system that functions as a scarf in colder weather.
