Line today announced it had crossed 5 million registered users in India within three weeks of the launch of the app on July 1and 200 million globally. Line is an Internet messenger service, which offers free voice calling and messaging facilities over a data connection.
Besides chat, the company also has Camera, Card, Brush and Play apps, which can be used through a gateway on the Line chat app or individually as independent apps.
Line claims it has over 150 million people playing games on its network and It has a list of 30 games and is aiming at adding more games adapted for Indian audiences. Line is also planning to add stickers inspired by Bollywood characters and will soon support Hindi and Tamil languages.
It would be interesting to see how Line is able to compete in this already crowded messaging space, which is currently dominated by WhatsApp. It will also face competition from relatively new players like Hike, WeChat and others, though there is no clarity about what sort of active user base any of these newly introduced services have in the country.
For instance, even though WeChat runs advertisements on television and other media, there was no outrage in India when the service went offline yesterday for a few hours. WeChat too claims to have over 200 million users. With WhatsApp and Facebook messenger dominating the carrier-agnostic messaging services in India, it remains to be seen whether Line can create a niche for itself.
