Modern day furniture design is all about utility; lightweight, movable, multi-purpose.This was the thinking behind Tyrone Stoddart’s BOXED, a multi-functional piece of furniture which can double up as a coffee table, desk, two stools, and a lamp can be extended by the simple introduction of another part to suit the user's need which all fit into a handy suitcase.

“I began looking into how the size of living space is decreasing year by year, and as we gradually learn to live in smaller spaces, our products need to be designed in light of this,” he told . “This led to the idea of multi-functional furniture but not just that, as I wanted it to be adaptable.”BOXED consists of 24 pieces: 20 legs, two stools, one lamp and the case that unfolds to be an approximately 2×2-foot table top or desk. It’s meant to be easily transportable and painlessly assemblable, making it a workaholic’s new best friend.

Made from ash tree wood, the piece of furniture is solid, simple and functional. But it’s also a lesson in conservation. Stoddart views the project as a way To raise awareness about Chalara (ash dieback), a disease that is currently killing off ash trees.  Stoddart includes a small pouch of ash seeds with every Boxed kit so owners can go out and plant their own tree in order to replenish the materials that were used to make BOXED.
You can’t purchase BOXED quite yet, but Stoddart says he’s looking into ways to mass manufacture them eventually. “I’m looking into starting to manufacture a few of them because I have interest from quite a lot of people,” he said. “I’d tweak some things with the design so that it became more easily mass produced, but overall, what you see is what you get.”The Boxed product is yet to make commercial production but your vote could help see it hit the market.
