Hasselblad Stellar Camera Is Thrice the Price And Inspired By Sony's RX100 with a Zebra Wood hand-grip

Swedish camera manufacturer Hasselblad brings its luxury craftsmanship to the world of pocket cameras, unveiled its latest design the Stellar.

Essentially a glorified take on the Sony RX100, the premium point-and-shoot features a 20.2 megapixel 1-inch-type (13.2 × 8.8 mm) CMOS sensor which made the RX100 so impressive for a compact. This is once again paired with the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T F1.8-4.9 lens which has a 35-mm effective focal length of 28-100-mm. It includes a range of upgraded materials thanks to Hasselblad’s customization of the exterior – a number of wood options and even carbon fiber can be applied to the camera. For that last one, you get to pick between: Padouk Wood, Olive Wood, Zebra Wood, Mahogany, Walnut, Wenge and Carbon Fiber.

Indeed, you'd be hard pushed to spot any differences between the specifications of the two cameras. Both have the same three inch LCD screen with 1,228,800 dots, the same access to full manual setting, a control ring around the lens and a suitably wide ISO range. Both cameras shoot JPEG and RAW images along with Full HD 1080/60p video.

Hasselblad CEO and Chairman, Dr. Larry Hansen, describes the new camera as “a work of art capture device that you can simply point and shoot to acquire stunning pictures.” He then goes on to tout the camera’s “full HD 1080/60p video with manual controls” and “larger than average point and shoot sensor [that] enables the user to capture extra light and reproduce every scene in truly stunning detail.” — all features available in the RX100.

Dr. Larry Hansen, Hasselblad's Chairman and CEO explains: "The world has never seen a compact camera like this before. The Hasselblad brand has always been about highest quality and distinctive style and we've created Stellar as a work of art capture device that you can simply point and shoot to acquire stunning pictures.

Since the camera was designed for the luxury/lifestyle sector (Hasselblad’s words, not ours) like the Lunar before it, it’s not going to come cheap. The Stellar, complete with its own luxury box and “naturally tanned Italian leather wrist strap,” is set to retail for approximately US$1,960 (€1,480 ) before tax that’s three times the RX100’s already-beefy $650 sticker— no ship date is mentioned in the press release.
