Canon EOS 70D Camera Unveils

Canon EOS 70D Hands-on

The EOS 70D is a mid-range SLR for enthusiast photographers with autofocus technology that unlocks the potential of Live View: Dual Pixel CMOS AF.

Measuring 139 x 104.3 x 78.5 mm (5.5 x 4.1 x 3.1 in) and weighing 755 g (27 oz) the Canon EOS 70D features a 3-inch vari-angle touchscreen LCD with 1,040K dots, like that on the Canon 700D. This helps when shooting in otherwise awkward positions, and the touchscreen allows for multi-touch operation and Touch AF. The 70D also boasts a built-in flash. However, the optical viewfinder only covers 98 percent of the frame and there's only a single SD card slot.

It borrows many of the best bits from Canon's existing SLRs, including the autofocus sensor from the EOS 7D, the fully articulated touchscreen from the EOS 700D (Rebel T5i), and built-in Wi-Fi from the EOS 6D which makes it possible to transfer images to your phone, tablet, or computer without dealing with cables or card readers. . But on the inside it sports an entirely new sensor that is, potentially, revolutionary. It offers 20.2MP resolution, but uses a 'Dual Pixel CMOS AF' design in which every single pixel is split into two separately-readable photodiodes, facing left and right.

The phase-detection autofocus technology is sensor-based and sees pixels each consist of two individual photodiodes. In Live View, these are read separately (with the resulting parallax images used to calculate the phase-difference) and together for imaging. This makes it different from other sensor-based autofocus systems, which use specific pixels for autofocus or imaging functions. High-speed phase-difference is possible on 80 percent of the frame, and Dual Pixel CMOS AF is compatible with 103 EF lenses at launch.

The Canon EOS 70D features Wi-Fi capabilities and a new Dual Pixel CMOS AF system

A powerful DIGIC 5+ Image Processor supports continuous shooting up to 7.0 frames per second, as well as an extended ISO range of 100–12800 (H: 25600) that allows shooting in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Stunning photos can be accomplished using the remarkable 19-point all cross-type AF system with a high precision dual cross f/2.8 center point, and advanced display options available on the Intelligent Viewfinder supply exceptional control.
