You merely know about how many times you make mistakes while writing. These mistakes are small in day-to-day life but the results of these mistakes could be disastrous while writing exam paper or some official work.

Falk Wolsky and Daniel Kaesmacher think there's still a place in this modern world for good penmanship and correct spelling and have taken to Kickstarter to get their Lernstift (German for "learning pen"), which vibrates to indicate when the writer makes spelling mistakes or exhibits poor penmanship, into production.

The idea for Lernstift was hatched when Wolsky's wife was helping their son do his homework and discovered he was making mistakes without her noticing. After she had expressed her wish for "a pen that points out errors right when he makes them," Wolsky decided to create such a device. The result is a digital pen that gently vibrates when it detects that a mistake has been made.

Lernstift is a regular pen with real ink, but inside is a special motion sensor, processor, memory and a small battery-powered Linux computer with a WiFi chip. Together those parts allow the pen to recognize specific movements, letter shapes and know a wide assortment of words. If it senses bad letter formation or messy handwriting, it will gently vibrate. Lernstift allows for exchangeable writing tips, meaning kids can choose between using a pencil, a fountain pen, and a ballpoint pen.

"The pen will have two functions -- calligraphy and orthography mode," Daniel Kaesmacher, the 33-year-old co-founder of Lernstift, told ABC News. "When it comes to orthography mode -- the pen will be able to recognize words and compare the word it recognized to a language database. If the word isn't recognized it will vibrate."

With that spelling and writing functionality, Lernstift, which means 'Learning Pen' in German, is aimed at kids just learning to write. In fact, co-founder Falk Wolsky, 36, had the idea for the pen last year while his 10-year-old son was doing his homework.

"The basic functionality is all in the pen, there is no app needed to perform the basic activities," Kaesmacher said. "But there are a lot more possibilities."

The digital pen will initially be capable of correcting just two languages – English and German (though which form of English isn't clear) – but there are plans to add many more languages, including Russian, Spanish, French, and Italian, after launch.

Parents can also keep an eye on their child’s learning using the pen’s optional app that tracks data on learning statistics. Since the pen is digital, it can also be programmed to share documents and sketches via its co-writing platform or through social media for school curriculum. Using built-in Wi-Fi, Lernstift can connect to other internet-connected devices.

The retail price of a single Lernstift is being set at $190, but early backers of the Kickstarter campaign can get one for between $135 and $150.
