Los Angeles architects Kyle and Liz von Hasseln have set up a business that produces 3D-printed sugar sculptures for wedding cakes, table centrepieces and pie toppings. Creating a paradigm shift this technology makes it possible to design, digitally model and print an utterly original sugar sculptures on top of a cake.
The duo founded 3D printing company The Sugar Lab while studying at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), where they graduated last autumn.

The pair hit upon the idea when attempting to bake a birthday cake for a friend without the use of that most essential of bakery tools: the oven. The pair decided to 3D print a cake instead, finding success with sugar. Reasoning that others would like their sweet creations, the pair started "micro-design firm" The Sugar Lab.
According to iGnant, the pair uses a mixture of water and alcohol to wet and harden a sugar substrate into the precise forms, a process similar, the pair says, to the way frosting hardens if left in the bowl.

"The process is fundamentally similar to other 3D printing applications," iGnant writes, adding that "they've just optimized the process for resolution and strength with sugar, rather than with a standard 3D printing material."
"That's an exciting part of 3D printing sugar for us - transforming sugar into a structural, sculptural medium that can start to define the form of the food instead of the other way around, and even to support it structurally," the designers added.

The East Los Angeles firm does not disclose their printing method on their website but whatever their method of construction, there are endless possibilities with this project.
