Sony And Panasonic Team Up To Develop 300GB Optical Discs |
Technology giants Sony and Panasonic have officially announced that they are working on the next-generation optical disc for long-term digital data storage. Both companies are planning to develop an optical disc with storage capabilities of at least 300 GB by the end of 2015.
In the joint announcement from the two companies, the move is said to target professional-use customers looking for long-term digital data storage solutions. The new disks are also meant to ensure inter-generational compatibility between various formats, thus cutting down the frequency of archiving updates required when storage mediums inevitably shift due to changes in hardware constructs.
According to the Nikkei, the primary customers for the high capacity diskc will be broadcasters and data centers, but the development also offers hope for the cloud-phobic that high capacity, offline solutions may continue to be available far into the future.
"Optical discs have excellent properties to protect them against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored," Panasonic said in a press release. "They also allow inter-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can continue to be read even as formats evolve. This makes them a robust medium for long-term storage of content."

The new technology sounds exciting, and may come as welcome news to businesses which aren't completely convinced about cloud storage or the lifespan of hard drives or SSDs.
