Sigma Offers Mount Conversion Service: swap cameras but keep using your old lenses

Photographic lens maker Sigma has just announced that it will start offering a first of its kind service to its customers: lens mount conversions that will allow photographers to swap their lenses over to a new camera system. Sigma hopes to make switching camera brands easier with the launch of a mount conversion service, which will adapt its lenses to work on your new camera of choice.

The important thing to note here is that the service is only applicable to Sigma lenses, and only its newer lenses at that. So don't get too excited about the prospect of being able to convert that Canon 50-mm F1.2 to a Nikon mount. But for users of Sigma's Global Vision lenses, like the 18-35-mm f/1.8, the service could release you from your camera brand shackles, should you want to move from Nikon to Canon, vice versa, or indeed to another brand.

DSLR photographers will be able to switch their lenses to Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax or Sigma mounts, while mirrorless camera owners will be able to switch from Micro Four Thirds to Sony NEX.

The lenses for DSLR cameras include 35mm F1.4 DG HSM, 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM, 30mm F1.4 DC HSM, 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM / DC MACRO HSM. 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM.

Eligible lenses for mirrorless cameras include 19mm F2.8 DN, 30mm F2.8 DN, 60mm F2.8 DN.

Costing between US$80 and $250 depending on the lens (plus shipping), the Sigma lens mount conversion service will be available from September 2.

Sigma is also introducing a 4 year warranty on all new products purchased on or after July 1st, 2013. Converted lenses will carry a six month warranty.
