Roku Will Compete Better Against Google’s Chromecast And Apple TV With Video Streaming From iOS

The Roku is a popular streaming media box among consumers, and it has now gained a new feature that should help it compete better against Google’s Chromecast and Apple TV – from a streaming standpoint, anyhow.

The 2.3 update expands on the “Play on Roku” feature introduced back in September 2012. That feature let you stream music and display photos from your iOS or Android device on your TV via a Roku device. The latest update now lets iOS consumers only to stream video from their iOS device’s Camera Roll , whether it’s an iPad, Phone or iPad touch, to their TV.

But it doesn't allow you to play TV shows or movies you’ve synced with your iPhone. Which makes it somewhat less useful than the Apple TV’s AirPlay streaming, but still a pretty cool addition.

It doesn’t appear to support third-party applications at this point. Instead, it allows you to stream any videos that are stored in your camera roll. That means you can quickly show off a quick clip of your weekend kayaking trip.

Once you update your Roku app you should see the “play on Roku” option when you access videos stored in your camera roll. It's hoped that, this is a test phase and that additional app support comes soon, too.
