Samsung Unveils Curved OLED TV for $8,999

Samsung unveiled its first curved OLED TV (model number KN55S9C) today at a press event alongside a new Ultra HD TV. The South Korean company was proud to announce that the 55-inch television, which goes on sale tomorrow, will cost under $9,000 which is 40% below as compared to  LG’s 55-inch curved 55EA9800 OLED HDTV ($15K) .

The move definitely took the industry by surprise, with reports just yesterday saying that Samsung’s TV would cost the same as LG’s model. During today’s media event, the South Korean company explained that the price reduction wasn’t planned, but was instead the result of better that expected yields. Whether Samsung meant to undercut LG or not, today’s news will likely kick off an OLED TV price war, and who doesn’t want that? Besides LG of course.

The curved OLED design is intended to produce deep blacks and vibrant colors, while providing an immersive experience with improved viewing angles. Samsung's TV includes the company's MultiView feature, which lets two people watch different full high-definition content feeds on the same television at the same time, even in 3D, with the help of 3D Active glasses.

The new OLED model KN55S9C features Smart TV, active Full HD 3D with dual viewing (with glasses), and Samsung’s smart remote control.

Unlike the LG which uses white OLED with red, green, blue and clear filters, the Samsung KN55S9C incorporates sub-pixels which emit red, blue or green. Samsung claims their OLED  panel technology eliminates the motion blur we noted in our review of the LG OLED. We are planning a review of this Samsung soon. Stay tuned.
