Sigmo Lets You "Talk And Understand" More Than 25 Languages

Sigmo, a simple Bluetooth device which uses existing online translation services to translate from one language to the other and back again in real-time. IT can instantly translate between 25 languages at a push of a button,  but the Sigmo team says this number will automatically increase as online translation services roll out updates.

The Sigmo prototype is a small square box that features a microphone, speaker, an on/off button, and first and second language buttons. The Sigmo pairs with iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth, and uses the device’s language translation software to complete the translation. A free Sigmo app allows users to choose which languages Sigmo should translate too and from. The device is very compact and unobtrusive, allowing users to pin it on their collar or belt. Sigmo is small enough to fit in any pocket or handbag.

Sigmo currently supports the following languages:

English (US), English (UK), English (Australia), English (Canada), Spanish (Spain), Spanish (United States), Spanish (Mexico), French (France), French (Canada), Finish, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese (China), Mandarin (Taiwan / Hong Kong), Catalan, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), Polish, Russian, Arabic, Indonesian, Hebrew, Czech, Turkish, African, Malay.

Sigmo comes in three different colors: black, white, and yellow

Sigmo's dependence on a data connection could be a potential hitch in dire situations. But the company is trying to make voice vocabulary available for download for offline use. The device's battery reportedly lasts for eight hours in conversation mode or for 300 hours of standby time.

Sigmo is currently seeking funding on Indiegogo, where the team behind it is hoping to raise $15,000 to finalize the app, finish testing the hardware prototype, and manufacture the first production run. One set of Sigmo products (comprising a Sigmo translator, stainless steel clip, neck strap, and wrist bracelet) is available for US$50, with the future retail price destined to be $65. If the team reaches their funding goals, the device will begin to ship out to backers after the 5th month of development.
