“Robo Taxis”: Self-Driving Cars From Google

“Robo Taxis”: Self-Driving Cars From Google

Google Inc., which has been working on software to help major automakers build self-driving cars, has logged 300,000 miles on the road without a single accident and has even persuaded California to legalize the self-driving car. Now, Jessica Lessin is reporting that the Internet giant may market its self-driving car as a “Robo Taxi,” instead of selling the cars directly to consumers.

The former WSJ staffer has learned that Google could launch a fleet of automated taxis that would pick up passengers by request, hopefully cutting down on accidents as well as the need for people to own their own cars. Lessin also reports that the company could roll out its “Robo Taxi” similar to the way it launched Google Fiber, targeting smaller, underserved regions initially.

“Robo Taxis”: Self-Driving Cars From Google

According to people familiar with Google’s negotiations, the company approached some of the big car brands to discuss potentially commercializing the autonomous driving technology it has been working on for some years. However, the response was supposedly underwhelming, with no deal forthcoming.

Undeterred, Google is exploring ways it could go it alone in self-driving car technology, so the insiders claim. So far, the company is said to have talked to companies such as Continental AG and Magna International – who supply many of the components the big brands use in their ranges – about the possibility of producing a car of Google’s own design.

Building a full car – and handling the regulatory minefield that comes with that – is a significantly more involved challenge than making a phone, tablet, or laptop, however, and it’s unclear how much of the project Google actually wants to take on itself. Let's see how google will succeed in its project.

GM To Include Smartphones Wireless Charging In 2014 Cars

GM To Include Smartphones Wireless Charging In 2014 Cars

General Motors Co. (GM), the largest U.S. automaker, will start offering wireless charging for smartphones in some vehicles next year, said Ran Poliakine, chief executive officer of Powermat Technologies Ltd.

Charging your smartphone in your car can be annoying, to say the least. Wires are in your way, getting wrapped around your car’s shifter and anything else within reach.

Wireless charging technology allows users to simply set the phone down in a certain area of the vehicle console or dash to recharge without having to deal with wires or adapters. The wireless charging solutions use a coil that receives electricity from a magnetic field when placed on the Powermat-enabled surface. However, one catch to adding wireless charging inside vehicles is that the phones require special cases in order to charge.

However, plenty of smartphones and tablets, ranging from the new Nexus 7 to the LG Optimus G Pro and Galaxy S4 (with a special battery cover) use Qi wireless charging, which was developed by the Wireless Power Consortium. A4WP, the Alliance for Wireless Power, is another competing standard that is trying to offer similar technologies to auto-makers.

The one roadblock to the problem, is that users’ smartphones will have to have their own built-in wireless charging technology. The vast majority of smartphones on the market do not include such a feature, so users will likely have to opt for a wireless charging case if they want to use the charging pads.

GM isn’t the first automaker to offer wireless charging technology in its cars. Toyota is already selling a similar feature in its 2013 Avalon, while Dodge made it available in the 2013 Dart. As more handset makers begin including wireless charging technology with their devices, you can expect to see the number of vehicles with installed charging pads to increase exponentially.

Korean Foldable Electric Car

Korean Foldable Electric Car

A folding electric vehicle prototype has been revealed by the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The car is designed to fold itself in order to save parking space. This electric car is quite possibly one of the first of its type to be introduced to South Korea. You may have heard of a similar concept in the form of the Hiriko by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) , which was presented in Berlin earlier this year.

KAIST

Features

With a maximum speed of 60km/h, the Armadillo-T can travel 100 kilometers after 10 minutes of battery charging. The car can be folded after parking and its length will be reduced from 2.8m to 1.65m all via a smartphone application. To save space, cameras are used to replace the sides and rear-view mirrors. According to the Korean Wall Street Journal, three Armadillo-Ts can be slotted into a standard sized parking lot in Korea after folding, using the same smartphone application.

While the Armadillo-T may not interest those with a need for speed, the prototype looks promising as a practical urban vehicle, especially in countries like Korea and Japan that have limited parking spaces in the city. The fact that it's also an electric car earns it extra brownie points for being environment-friendly.

Maruti Suzuki Stingray Launched In India

Maruti Suzuki Stingray Launched In India

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Limited, the country's largest passenger car maker, has introduced a new model in the hatchback segment, named Stingray, between a price tag of Rs. 4.1 lakh and Rs. 4.67 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). With the launch of a new model, the auto maker is targeting to come over the slowdown blues, which have been prevailing in the Indian auto market from quite a some time now.

With the Stingray, which will be more expensive than the existing WagonR by about Rs 20,000, MSI is hoping to attract young customers and make the most out of the upcoming festive season.

For the Indian market, Maruti Suzuki has dropped the Wagon R moniker from the name of the new model and are simply calling it the Maruti Suzuki Stingray, unlike the international markets where the model is tagged as Suzuki Wagon R Stingray.

The company says, Stingray features several high-end features usually associated only with high-end cars, which include first in class projector headlamps and reflector grille. Other features include gunmetal grey coloured alloy wheels, rear spoilers and side skirts, premium black upholstery, leather wrapped steering with audio controls, multi-information display including distance to empty, driver airbag, ABS and tilt adjustable steering,  among others.

The model is being offered in a total of 3 variants - LXi, VXi and VXi with an Option Pack - and all the three variants are being powered the same 1.0-Litre K10 petrol engine, which does duties in the regular Wagon R and is rated at 68PS and 90Nm. The engine comes mated to a 5-Speed manual transmission. Unlike its elder sibling, the Stingray will not be offered in a CNG variant.

List of variants & the corresponding prices of the 2013 Maruti Suzuki Stingray:

  1. 2013 Maruti Suzuki Stingray LXi - Rs 4.09 lakh
  2. 2013 Maruti Suzuki Stingray VXi - Rs 4.37 lakh
  3. 2013 Maruti Suzuki Stingray VXi (O) - Rs 4.66 lakh

The rear sports combination lamps with clear-lens treatment, a spoiler and a chrome strip with “Stingray” embossed on it. Maruti hasn’t made any major changes inside barring an all-black treatment in place of the dual-tone shade on the regular WagonR, reports suggest.

The Stingray has been draped with all-black interiors with 'premium' upholstery and has been planted with an in-dash audio system compatible with USB/AUX inputs, which have steering mounted controls too. The top-end models in the spectrum have been equipped with tilt-adjustable steering wheel and electrically adjustable rear view mirrors.

Interiors-wise, there are a few changes. The top of the line Vx(O) gets a driver airbag and ABS. Power-folding mirrors and a new music system are also part of the package. The dials also have been worked upon and feature instant and average fuel efficiency as also distance to empty indicator with blue backlighting.

There are audio controls on the leather wrapped steering wheel. Unlike the dual-tone interiors of the regular Wagon R, the Stingray has all black interiors. Space inside the cabin, a Wagon R USP has been retained.

Lamborghini's Most Extreme Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse Sports Car Unveiled

Lamborghini's Most Extreme Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse Sports Car Unveiled

Lamborghini is referring its new Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse as a way to experience the emotion of the race track in a street car.

Based on Lamborghini’s Super Trofeo track cars, the new LP 570-4 Squadra Corse sports a 570 hp, V10 engine that will launch it from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a prompt 3.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph), rear wing capable of generating three times the downforce of the Gallardo LP 560-4 and removeable engine hood as its race cars. And it derives the same benefits from them — unbelievable quickness, ground hugging ability and fast pit stops. Lambo calls it the “most extreme” in line-up Gallardo yet. Both the cover and rear wing are made from carbon composites to reduce weight which adds its quickness.

Squadra Corse's carbon fiber rear wing generates three times the downforce of the Gallardo LP 560-4

Speaking of weight loss programs, the new Gallardo tips the scales at a svelte 1340 kg (2954 lb), 70 kg (154 lb) lighter than the LP 560-4. Carbon fiber and aluminum architecture is used throughout, resulting in a stiffer, lighter chassis.

The new Gallardo weighs in at 1340 kg (2954 lb), 70 kg (154 lb) lighter than the LP 560-4

To break down the car's moniker, 570 refers to the 5.7 liter engine while the 4 refers to the all-wheel drive setup. Squadra Corse refers to the recently-founded division within Automobili Lamborghini that manages all of the company’s motorsport activities.

Carbon fiber also dominates the Squadra Corse's interior. The door panels, the racing seats, the center console cover, the handbrake frame, the lower rim of the steering wheel, the trim around the main and secondary instrument panels, and the door handles are some of the parts that have been made from the sturdy yet lightweight material. Alcantara, meanwhile, is used on the underside of the dashboard, the central panel of the seat cushion and the backrest. For more comfort Buyers can substitute ordinary seats for the standard racing seats.

As comfortable as it is made, there will be no mistaking its race-bred bearings when drivers step on the gas pedal. Squadra Corse sprints from zero to 62 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds. Zero to 124 mph comes in a blazing 10.4 seconds. It tops out somewhere north of 170 mph. It is paired with a six-speed transmission with paddle shifters.

The LP 570-4 Squadra Corse will make its world debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor in September, the same car show at which the Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale debuted two years ago. The Squadra Corse will be available in Giallo Midas (yellow), Bianco Monocerus (white), Grigio Thalasso (grey) and of course, Rosso Mars (red), with a decal strip along the flank displaying the colors of the Italian flag.

Accentuating the Squadra Corse's exterior is the matte-black finish on the large rear wing that contrasts with the body color and the high-gloss black paint on the hood, front air intakes, rear diffuser and 19-inch forged wheels. The brake calipers, meanwhile, are available in red, black or yellow. Pricing is to be revealed later this year.

BMW launches it's i3 Electric Car

Front View Of BMW i3 Electric Car

Back View Of BMW i3 Electric Car

The German luxury carmaker BMW has presented its first mass-production i3 electric hatchback. The Munich-based company underscored the seriousness of its long-term ambitions regarding mobility in Germany and abroad.

The i3 is a funky-looking four-seater that Wired is calling “the most innovative thing to come out of Munich in a decade.”

The i3 comes after an estimated $2.7 billion (2 billion euros) investment program, with the German carmaker hoping the resources pumped into research and development will eventually pay off.

The i3 is more than just a car. It's a revolutionary step towards sustainable mobility. It is purpose-built around an electric power train to serve the needs of our megacity customers," said Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Norbert Reithofer, at the world premiere in New York on Monday.

The fact that a typical electric vehicle (EV) can only be driven 75 miles to 80 miles (120 km to 130 km) before requiring a recharge — which takes up a lot more time than a gas-station pit stop — is a deal breaker for many consumers. Using electric power, the BMW i3 can be driven out 80 miles (130 km), perhaps 100 miles (160 km). That’s fine for many commuters, but insufficient for longer journeys.

Extending the driving range of the i3 is as simple as purchasing the optional two-cylinder, 34-horsepower rear engine that runs on gasoline — and that basically doubles the vehicle’s range. BMW is also expected to give i3 owners access to gas-powered loaner cars during the days when they need a vehicle with longer driving range — on, say, a weekend road trip.

One of the most common arguments against EVs is that the math doesn’t add up: whatever money you’d save on gas is negated by the premium you pay compared with a traditional gas-powered car. Prices have already dropped significantly on electric cars, with abundant cheap lease deals and thousands of dollars slashed off the sticker prices of the Ford Focus EV, Nissan Leaf and others.

The i3 also leverages the latest mobile technology to enhance functionality both in and out of the car. An Apple cable connects iPhone owners with apps and phone features. The BMW i Remote smartphone app offers functions like battery monitoring, car location, and door locking and unlocking.

The i3 comes with an i Remote smartphone app

In the U.S., the BMW i3 will start at US$41,350 or US$45,200 for the version with the backup gasoline engine, before factoring in federal and state rebates and tax incentives. That’s not cheap, but it’s less expensive than what many anticipated for an electric-powered BMW. It’s also a lot less pricey than the Tesla Model S, the premium that has already set the standard for electric cars — and that starts at around US$70,000.

The TerraCraft: 3 Wheeler Car And Motorbike Hybrid With A Unique Steering System

The TerraCraft 3 wheeler car and motorbike hybrid

The Terracraft is a sharp-looking 3-wheeler concept that aims to offer a unique hybrid of the motorcycle riding and car driving experiences. It offers a retractable roof and doors which can offer weather protection and aerodynamics. There is a tandem double seat inside which mirrors the motorbike pillion experience.

Its unique steering system means the driver can manually dial in a tilt angle to replicate the sensation of leaning a motorcycle into a corner. The seating looks like the same padded comfort models from a long distance BMW or Honda tourer.

James ‘Wes’ Abbott, a former NASA sub contractor, said that the hybrid is ideal for ‘aging baby boomers who are looking for alternatives to stay on the road and to keep cruising with their clubs’. The TerraCraft is a very sexy-looking concept bike. It almost looks as if a Bugatti Veyron has been squashed to a third of its normal width and equipped with formula one-style open wheels, albeit with a much narrower track, he added.

The TerraCraft 3 wheeler car and motorbike hybrid

It's a tandem 2-seater, much like a motorcycle, with a very comfy looking saddle straight out of a luxury mega-tourer, and it's got the added benefit of retractable side doors and a roof canopy that also slides back into the rear of the vehicle to make it a convertible.

The designer is working on a prototype right now taking  the back half of a Honda GoldWing GL1500 to build a proof of concept he should be able to unveil at The Texas Lone Star Rally later in the year.

"I'm at 70% on the prototype chassis, working about 12 hours a day on that right now. I have the rolling chassis, I have the suspension fabricated up and right now I'm about to start doing some refinements in the steering linkage to mitigate bumps and such."

The TerraCraft 3 wheeler car and motorbike hybrid

The TerraCraft 3 wheeler car and motorbike hybrid

The TerraCraft 3 wheeler car and motorbike hybrid

"Being that we're bootstrapping this right now we're not putting a lot of giant funds into getting this built. I'm kind of building it, and the engineers are kind of coming in behind me and reverse engineering what I do. Otherwise, these guys are NASA trained engineers, and they'll think of seven different designs and debate about it for seven years and about 70 million dollars' worth of budget."

Abbott says TerraCraft is "doing a bit of fundraising – we're kind of bootstrapping this and trying to maintain ownership and control without going into the heavy investors. We really want to stick with the niche market. and potentially go into the market with kit options and segue into the production models after that. We'd like to mitigate dilution and take care of our core group."

To that end, he's willing to offer the first 10 TerraCraft vehicles to early adopters at cost price as the company tools up toward production, or even less if the new owner is willing to take the bike out to expo shows and presentations.

It's looks great with  lots of good ideas and he is thinking to give the pilot a chance to be either in the wind or protected from the rain.  I hope it is not too expensive.

Mercedes Unveils Solar-Powered "VISION" Golf Cart Concept

Mercedes Unveils Solar-Powered "VISION" Golf Cart Concept

Mercedes-Benz has revealed a concept of what it bills as the “ultimate golf cart” as part of activities at this year’s British Open at the Muirfield Golf Club in Scotland.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision Golf Cart concept comes when earlier this year, they called upon golf and automobile fans from around the world to submit their ideas for a Mercedes-Benz golf cart of the future. The Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center in Carlsbad, California then took the most popular ideas and requirements and combines the aspects of Mercedes-Benz vehicles with the functionality of a golf cart. For example the diamond grille that is used on Mercedes-Benz cars was incorporated to give the cart a modern face that is unmistakably a Mercedes-Benz.

The golf cart is powered by an electric motor that gets its energy from a battery that is kept continuously charged by a solar module integrated into the roof. The vehicle is controlled by a joystick instead of a steering wheel, mounted on the center console, which makes it easy for both passengers drive the golf cart.

The interior includes a joystick driving control and iPhone/iPad dock

"I was very inspired by the idea of designing a golf cart, giving it a new shape and new sorts of meaning," says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG. "Why not treating a golf cart like a car, and making it a 'Golf Car'."

IT FEATURES:

World’s Fastest Lawnmower: Honda's Mean Mower Hits 130 mph

World’s Fastest Lawnmower

It has never been done before. Honda brings their latest creation to production. They have created an extraordinary piece of machinery in the Mean Mower that is the fastest lawnmower on the planet.

Honda (UK) teamed up with their title winning British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) partner, Team Dynamics have build Mean Mower with a top speed estimated to be over 130 miles per hour and it can make 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.0 seconds.

Mean Mower has a top speed of over 130 miles per hour and it can make 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.0 seconds

This racy take on the riding mower develops 96 Nm (70 lb.ft) of torque, 109 hp (which gives it roughly 100 more ponies than most of its lawn tractor brethren) and has a power-to-weight ratio of 532 bhp/tonne thanks to a weight of only 140 kg (308 lb).

Billed as world’s fastest lawn mower, Team Dynamics re-engineered the HF2620 from the ground-up, adding an all-new fabricated chassis, custom-made from 4130 chromoly, a 1,000cc engine from a VTR Firestorm, a paddle-shifted six-speed transmission, a Cobra sports seat, a Scorpion exhaust system and a steering rack taken from a Morris Minor, a bespoke suspension and wheels from an ATV.

The body was sourced from the production mower. The grass bag provides a home for the fuel tank, a high capacity oil cooler and a secondary water cooling radiator.

Ten cutting-edge concept cars set to make the leap to production

The BMW i8 (left) and i3 are just two concept cars that are set to go into production in the next couple of years

The recent rumor about a possible production version of the Pininfarina Sergio concept got us thinking: What other wild, stylish, high-tech concept cars are coming to market in the near future? Turns out, a lot. In fact, 2013-2014 may very well prove one of the best time periods in history for for recent cutting-edge concept vehicles to make the leap from concept to production. From electric and hybrid hypercars to reinvented daily drivers, these concept cars will soon be all over our highways and country roads.

2011 BMW i3

2011 BMW i3

Before the month of July is out, BMW will debut the production version of its very first electric car. Referred to for years as the MegaCity Vehicle, before making its conceptual debut as the i3 at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the city EV will launch as the first member of the new BMW i sub-brand. The German automaker announced last week that it will reveal the production model live on YouTube on July 29.

In its current state, the i3" target="_blank">i3 packs enough battery power to keep the 170-hp motor spinning the rear wheels for 80 to 100 miles (129 to 161 km). It has DC fast charging capabilities, allowing drivers to juice up to 80 percent battery capacity within about 30 minutes. Though it's lost some of the panoramic glass design of the original 2011 concept, the updated i3 Concept Coupe unveiled in LA last year still has oversized windows that provide a close connection with the world outside. The production i3 will be equipped with model-specific ConnectedDrive technologies, including dynamic driving-range mapping.

2010 Porsche 918 Spyder

2010 Porsche 918 Spyder

Porsche jump-started the green supercar movement when it showed the original 918 Spyder at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The car looked like it might be a one-off concept at the time, but reaction from prospective buyers proved strong enough to convince Porsche to build it.

Porsche has shown several versions of the 918 over the three years since it debuted, and happily for buyers that plonked down the requisite US$845,000, the most recent version has upped the ante from 718 hp to 887 hp. Its performance specs have also improved, from 3.2 seconds 0-62 mph (100 km/h) and a 198-mph (318 km/h) top speed on the original to 2.8 seconds and 211 mph (339 km/h). Porsche announced the latest specs in May, and it appears to be sticking to its plan of starting production in September with US deliveries planned for before the end of the year.

2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell

2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell

As advanced and impressive as it is, the 918 Spyder won't be without competition when it hits the market. Originally introduced as the 526-hp SLS AMG E-CELL prototype a few months after the 918 debut in 2010, the 751-hp Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive is scheduled for launch this (northern) summer. As an all-electric car, the SLS AMG E-Drive's driving character is sure to be much different from the 918 Spyder's, but it's a technological flagship like the 918.
The €416,500 (US$550,000) car can hit 62 mph in 3.9 seconds on its way to an electronically limited 155-mph (249 km/h) top speed. The driver accesses all that performance while tucked inside the ever-intriguing gullwinged body.

One major disadvantage the E-Drive has compared to the 918 is that Mercedes has no plans of offering it in the United States. But we guess that's a disadvantage for those in the US, not the E-Drive itself.

2013 Spyker B6 Venator

2013 Spyker B6 Venator

Want to order an all-out exotic but hold onto the electric motors? The Spyker B6 Venator should leave you satisfied. Introduced at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the B6 Venator is designed to bring Spyker back into the spotlight as a crafter of "meticulously built automobiles."

We're loath to call a 375-bhp sports car a supercar, but if its yet-to-be-detailed performance falls short of super, the B6 will still be accurately described as a sports car dressed up in exotic supercar apparel. It looks and feels the part, from its wavy curves and aviation-influenced styling, to its classically appointed bull-hide leather interior. So even if it doesn't smoke-cloud to 62 mph in a flat three seconds, it's bound to make an indelible impression on driver and bystander alike.

While we're more inclined to believe a major automaker's time frame over that of a small, up-and-down firm like Spyker, we'll believe its early-2014 production plans until it says differently, or the time passes. It plans to get the car out to Asia, Europe and the Middle East first, with sales in the US beginning later in 2014 in the $125,000 and $150,000 range.

2012 Infiniti LE

2012 Infiniti LE

Previewed as a concept at the 2012 New York Auto Show, the Infiniti LE is a more upscale version of the Nissan Leaf. Like the Leaf, it will have some competition from a GM series hybrid, the Cadillac ELR (discussed below). In the current electric and hybrid market, however, they won't be competing quite as closely as the Leaf and Volt were in 2010/2011.

Infiniti didn't provide all the details when showing the LE concept, but it did say that the powertrain boasted a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and 240 lb-ft (325 Nm) of torque. Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer recently told Autocar that the manufacturer is still planning to equip the LE with the wireless charging capabilities that were part of the concept. It plans for the LE to "become reality" in 2014.

2013 Toyota Corolla Furia Concept

2013 Toyota Corolla Furia Concept

The Corolla doesn't play in the big leagues with some of these other concepts, but the Corolla Furia Concept did manage to hold its own against the Chevy Corvettes and Acura NSXs of the 2013 North American International Auto Show. Toyota gave the Corolla a decidedly aggressive and angry disposition, transforming it from a commonplace commuter tucked anonymously into the strip mall parking lot to a car that makes you step back and ask aloud, "What is that?!"

The 2014 Corolla that Toyota introduced last month keeps more of the Furia's edge than it loses, including the loud paint, which is now purple rather than orange. It's still the same lovably simple but effective worker bee, and doesn't have any exciting new performance or tech, but it definitely flaunts a new look that should broaden its appeal with buyers.

2009 Cadillac Converj

2009 Cadillac Converj

It took quite a while, but the Cadillac Converj concept that GM showed at NAIAS 2009 became reality at this year's Detroit show in the form of the ELR. In that four-year interim, the EPA tested the Chevy Volt; the Volt launched on the market; and GM tweaked the plug-in hybrid hardware that underpins both the Volt and ELR.

When compared to the Converj, the ELR gets the slightly larger 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery introduced on the 2013 Volt. On the other hand, as the Volt did when it went from concept to production, the ELR loses a few miles of all-electric range, down to an estimated 35 (56 km), from 40 (64 km) on the Converj. We like crazy concept interiors as much as anyone, but the ELR's Opus semi-aniline leather, carbon fiber and CUE interior is a definite step up from the white sci-fi interior of the Converj.

Cadillac said in Detroit that it will begin ELR production by the end of the year, with sales to follow in early 2014.

2012 Tesla Model X

2012 Tesla Model X

Tesla has always done things a little differently than the traditional auto companies. In the case of the Model X, it introduced the crossover at its headquarters last February, between big shows like NAIAS and Geneva. The car will come in both front- and all-wheel drive versions, and since it's a crossover, we're most interested in the latter, which puts an electric motor on each axle for 50 percent more torque and a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) of under five seconds.

The Model X doesn't look quite as sporty as the Roadster or Model S, but it does look more like a sporty hot hatchback than the average CUV. The rear "Falcon Wing" doors are a unique feature that only add to its visual appeal. They're designed for more than just looks, too, letting the kids free in the tightest of Christmas-time parking spaces and providing step-in access to the second and third rows.

The Model X is available for pre-order now with 60- and 85-kWh battery packs, and Tesla plans to begin deliveries next year. It says that prices will be in line with comparably equipped Model S cars.

2009 BMW Vision EfficientDynamics/2011 BMW i8

2009 BMW Vision EfficientDynamics/2011 BMW i8

The 2014 i8 is expected to hit the market early next year, and we'd be surprised if the production i8 doesn't follow the 2011 i8 Concept and 2009 Vision EfficientDynamics (VED) concept in debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. While the i3 will appeal to drivers looking for a zero emissions city commuter, the second member of the i family will provide a mix of sports car performance and hybrid fuel economy.

The i8 Concept has a 220-hp three-cylinder engine over the rear axle, combined with a modified version of the i3's e-drive system up front. That combination doesn't quite push the i8 to 918 Spyder-levels of performance, but it does offer an intriguing combination of performance and efficiency. BMW says that the 2+2 can accelerate to 62 mph in under five seconds while boasting fuel economy figure of 104 mpg (2.7 L/100 km), including 20 miles (32 km) of all-electric driving. Another interesting feature are the i8 Concept's laser headlights, which are set to be a first for a production vehicle.

In addition to the original VED and the 2011 i8, BMW showed the i8 in convertible form last year.

2012 Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe

2012 Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe

An evolution of the Concept Style Coupe revealed at Beijing's Auto China 2012, the all-new CLA-Class is an entry-level Mercedes aimed at younger buyers. The car isn't quite as visually interesting as the original Concept Style, but Mercedes still insists that the mid-size four-door's look is avante-garde.

When the $30,000 CLA-Class hits the market in September, it will come powered by a 208-hp, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A 4MATIC all-wheel-drive version will hit the market next year. The CLA will include some of the latest Mercedes technologies, such as mbrace2 connectivity and Apple Siri integration.

Self Valet Parking By Volvo Car In 2014

Volvo autonomous parking side view

There are plenty of apps out there that make the onerous task of finding parking a little easier. But what if that app not only find the vacant place but with collaborative efforts with the car, park it.

Volvo is developing a smart, driverless vehicle that will park itself in a vacant spot. The car is the “next giant leap” for the automaker in the development of safe cars, the company says, although the vehicle is still just a concept car.

“Autonomous Parking is a concept technology that relieves the driver of the time-consuming task of finding a vacant parking space. The driver just drops the vehicle off at the entrance to the car park and picks it up in the same place later,” said Thomas Broberg, a senior safety advisor at Volvo Car Group.

Volvo autonomous parking with phone

The car would use sensors in the road to find an available parking space in a parking lot. Once done, it automatically sends the driver a notification that the car is parked. Of course, this would only work in a special parking lot equipped with the necessary sensors. But by the time the technology is fully developed maybe road sensors will be commonplace.

What about the risk of collisions with other cars or pedestrians?

The Swedish automaker says detection and auto-brake systems will allow the autonomous car to react safely and smoothly with other cars and pedestrians in the parking lot.

“Our approach is based on the principle that autonomously driven cars must be able to move safely in environments with non-autonomous vehicles and unprotected road users,” Thomas Broberg, senior safety adviser, said in a news release.

Volvo says it’s the first car manufacturer in the world to show a prototype of a self-parking car that interacts with other road users.

Safety adviser Broberg says Volvo will introduce the first features on autonomous steering in the Volvo XC90 at the end of 2014.

LOOK, HOW THIS WORKS:

Drive to a designated drop-off spot, near the entrance to the parking lot.

Get out, and use your phone to turn your car into its own valet.

The car goes into self-driving mode.

Then it shoots off, finds a free spot, and parks.

Then it texts you to let you know where it is.

The car picks you up when you're ready to hit the road.

And off you go.
