Moto X reveal 'Magic Glass' display

As Motorola’s first Google smartphone, the Moto X has been featured in murmurings for a while now.

Reports have pegged the Moto X as a midrange smartphone with a premium feel.
The so-called Magic Glass is said to be Corning’s Gorilla Glass, but rather than your standard flat, tough glass named after a primate, the glass will wrap around the front edges of the device, offering a curved feel. The glass won’t wrap around very much, and it wouldn’t be surprising if it doesn’t offer any new viewing area. Instead, the glass would offer extra protection to the phone. It wouldn’t save the phone from a hammer intentionally directed at the screen by an ex, but would strengthen the phone against little bumps and dings, such as when you haphazardly place the phone on a hard surface.

A curved surface wouldn’t fly on a phone with a standard rectangular design, though, as there would likely be a bit of a gap between the rounded curve and the flat bezel.

This is a single sheet of Gorilla Glass which is moulded to a special polymer to make a continuous surface that wraps around the entire front and edges of the device. There is zero gap with the back. Moto X will feature a laminated aluminium design, with an emphasis on keeping it lightweight and durable.
The alleged specifications of Moto X include a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 320 GPU for graphics. It is likely to feature a 4.5-inch display with on-screen keys. On the camera front, it is expected to include a 10.5-megapixel rear camera with flash and a 2.1-megapixel front camera. It's likely to run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The Moto X is expected to include 16GB of internal storage, out of which 12GB will be user accessible. Connectivity options might include NFC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The device is expected to be backed by a 2,200mAh battery.

10 New features in Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

Google has announced the roll out of the next iteration of its Android operating system, dubbed as version 4.3, with the launch of its new Nexus 7 tablet. The new version will be called 'Jelly Bean' and would actually be the third version to carry the same tag after Android 4.1 and Android 4.2. The latest update comes about nine months after Google introduced Android 4.2.
However, as suggested by previous leaks, the new Android version doesn't bring a big makeover and comes with a few major features. The new OS is being rolled out first to Google's Nexus range of devices including the original Nexus 7, Nexus 4, Nexus 10 tablet and will ship with the new Nexus 7.

We take a look at its new features.

1. Restricted profiles

Google added multi-user profiles in the last iteration of Android and it seems the search engine giant wants to enhance that experience through restricted profiles. With the new feature, users can restrict app usage and content consumption on an Android device. So you'll be able to set profiles for each user of the device in case of multiple users. For instance, parents can control what apps or games their kids have access to on their tablets. However, it's worth pointing out that the new restricted feature is only available on Android tablets.

2. Bluetooth Smart Ready

Google seems to be making way for wearable technology by introducing the Bluetooth Smart Ready feature in Android 4.3. Devices running Android 4.3 will now support low-energy Bluetooth Smart accessories like heart rate monitors, pedometers, thermometers and many others. Users can now sync the low energy devices without these affecting the battery usage of the device, as per Google. This feature was missing on Google's mobile operating system, till now. This would also make way for Android friendly wearable tech.

3. Dial-pad Autocomplete

Android 4.3 now adds the autocomplete feature in the dial-pad suggesting contact names or phone numbers when users start keying-in something. This is not a new feature as OEMs like Samsung and HTC had already introduced this feature on to their UI skins running on top of Android, but devices running stock Android were missing it. Users can initiate the feature by going to the app settings and enabling 'Dial Pad autocomplete'

4.Notification Access
The Notification bar has been a popular feature on Android and with Android 4.3, you can control and interact with the status bar notifications. This would allow users to control how notifications are pushed to the primary and connected devices(smart watches, fitness bands). Users will also be able to see all the notifications at one place.

5. OpenGL ES 3.0
If you are a gaming junkie, the new update will definitely excite you. This feature would let Android devices render high quality graphics in games and other apps. Google claims that Android 4.3 supports the new version of the industry standard for high performance graphics. Google also gave a demo of a game showing detailed textures, lens flare, and reflections. This was missing in Android 4.2.

6. Simplified Setup Wizard

Android Jelly Bean now supports corrections to user inputs while signing-in to the device, the first time. This is due to more streamlined user agreements. Now a user can change the information that was keyed-in during the first boot of the device. Google has also introduced faster user switching from the lock screen in case of multiple users.

7. Bluetooth AVRCP

Google devices running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean can sync with Bluetooth enabled car stereos and offer additional functionality. The Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 version allows stereos to display metadata such as song names when music is being streamed from an Android 4.3 device.

8. Location accuracy features via Wi-Fi scan only mode
Google has now increased the location accuracy of Android devices by allowing location scanning via Wi-Fi.

It now allows apps to get location data through Wi-Fi even when Wi-Fi is set to off and not being used for data access.

9. Keyboard & input

Android 4.3 comes with an upgraded algorithm for tap-typing recognition that makes text input easier while chatting via messages or even while composing emails. It also brings a new emoji keyboard, which we've previously seen in iOS. The update also adds lower latency input for gamepad buttons and joysticks.

10.Hindi support lands on Android 4.3

Google has introduced native local language support to its operating system for Afrikaans, Amharic, Hindi, Swahili and Zulu. Hindi has finally reached the stock Android operating platform.

With the update, Google has also added support for Hebrew and Arabic (right-to-left) in the home screen, Settings, Phone, People, and Keep apps.

Bonus - New Camera UI

Android 4.3 also offers a new updated Camera app that features a new arch based menu which makes it easier to control and switch camera settings.

BMW launches it's i3 Electric Car

Front View Of BMW i3 Electric Car

Back View Of BMW i3 Electric Car

The German luxury carmaker BMW has presented its first mass-production i3 electric hatchback. The Munich-based company underscored the seriousness of its long-term ambitions regarding mobility in Germany and abroad.

The i3 is a funky-looking four-seater that Wired is calling “the most innovative thing to come out of Munich in a decade.”

The i3 comes after an estimated $2.7 billion (2 billion euros) investment program, with the German carmaker hoping the resources pumped into research and development will eventually pay off.

The i3 is more than just a car. It's a revolutionary step towards sustainable mobility. It is purpose-built around an electric power train to serve the needs of our megacity customers," said Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Norbert Reithofer, at the world premiere in New York on Monday.

The fact that a typical electric vehicle (EV) can only be driven 75 miles to 80 miles (120 km to 130 km) before requiring a recharge — which takes up a lot more time than a gas-station pit stop — is a deal breaker for many consumers. Using electric power, the BMW i3 can be driven out 80 miles (130 km), perhaps 100 miles (160 km). That’s fine for many commuters, but insufficient for longer journeys.

Extending the driving range of the i3 is as simple as purchasing the optional two-cylinder, 34-horsepower rear engine that runs on gasoline — and that basically doubles the vehicle’s range. BMW is also expected to give i3 owners access to gas-powered loaner cars during the days when they need a vehicle with longer driving range — on, say, a weekend road trip.

One of the most common arguments against EVs is that the math doesn’t add up: whatever money you’d save on gas is negated by the premium you pay compared with a traditional gas-powered car. Prices have already dropped significantly on electric cars, with abundant cheap lease deals and thousands of dollars slashed off the sticker prices of the Ford Focus EV, Nissan Leaf and others.

The i3 also leverages the latest mobile technology to enhance functionality both in and out of the car. An Apple cable connects iPhone owners with apps and phone features. The BMW i Remote smartphone app offers functions like battery monitoring, car location, and door locking and unlocking.

The i3 comes with an i Remote smartphone app

In the U.S., the BMW i3 will start at US$41,350 or US$45,200 for the version with the backup gasoline engine, before factoring in federal and state rebates and tax incentives. That’s not cheap, but it’s less expensive than what many anticipated for an electric-powered BMW. It’s also a lot less pricey than the Tesla Model S, the premium that has already set the standard for electric cars — and that starts at around US$70,000.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Launched in India for Rs 46,990

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Launched in India for Rs 46,990

We have already discussed about Sony Xperia Z Ultra specifications in our previous article. It's time for indian viewers to keep it in your hands as it has been launched in india for Rs 46,990.

Sony's latest smartphone, an LTE-capable phablet rocking a massive 6.44-inch screen, is a powerful addition to the Xperia family.  the device features a 6.4" monstrous screen and a Snapdragon 800 chipset, which is the fastest ARM chip put in a smartphone to date that runs at 1080p resolution.

This new screen is paired with Qualcomm's latest and greatest mobile processor, the impressively potent 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM and 4G LTE connectivity too.

The Z Ultra also weighs in a bit more than the Xperia Z, at 212 grams versus 146 grams, but offers better water resistance certification. The Sony Xperia Z is certified to IP55 and IP57 levels, while the Xperia Z Ultra to IP55 and IP58 standards. Which all basically means that the Xperia Z can withstand submersion in water to a depth of 1m for up to 30 minutes, while the Xperia Z Ultra can safely go under the 1m mark and stay under water for longer periods. I also noticed that the headphone jack is exposed in the Z Ultra, but is still water resistant, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active’s design.

Available in stores in black, white or purple colors, from August 2nd onwards. There will also be a cover with battery (available seperately for Rs 11,990), Magnetic charging dock DK30 (Rs 2990) and Stereo Bluetooth Headset SBH52 (Rs 7490) available at launch.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra will bea vailable in stores in black, white or purple colors, from August 2nd onwards

Farm 432: A Kitchen Appliance That Breeds Fly Larva For Protein

Farm 432: A Kitchen Appliance That Breeds Fly Larva For Protein

Flies are usually considered unwelcome guests in the kitchen, but a Designer and Fulbright scholar Katharina Unger has created "Farm 432" whisc is a fly-breeding device for home use that continually collects fly larva as a protein source for less squeamish diners. As unappetizing as it may sound, the designer hopes that convincing the Western world to add insects to its diet could help increase the planet's overall food supply.

"Farm 432 enables people to turn against the dysfunctional system of current meat production by growing their own protein source," said Unger.

Unger, an industrial design student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, devised her concept of a self-contained fly larva farm as an alternative to factory livestock.
"Black soldier fly larva are one of the most efficient protein converters in insects, containing up to 42% of protein, a lot of calcium and amino acids," the designer adds. After 432 hours, 1 gram of black soldier fly eggs turns into 2.4 kilograms of larva protein, so Unger predicts that people could harvest approximately 500 grams of larva a week, producing two meals.

Using Farm 432,  after 432 hours, 1 gram of black soldier fly eggs turns into 2.4 kilograms of larva protein

The Farm 432 itself resembles an empty water cooler with a compartment on top for adding the initial batch of larva. After the larva have matured, the resulting flies migrate into the large, clear plastic chamber so they can mate and produce more larva. The bottom of the chamber contains several holes which provide either food, water, or a space to lay eggs. Any eggs that are laid in these spaces drop down into another chamber, where they hatch and grow. Once they're able to move, the larva instinctively climb up a short tunnel, where they are trapped in a collection bucket to be consumed later.

The larva instinctively climb up a short tunnel, where they are trapped in a collection bucket to be consumed later

As long as some of the larva are set aside and put back in the main chamber, the cycle can continue indefinitely with just a little bit of food to sustain them.

"The larvae I bred have a very distinctive taste," she said. When you cook them, they smell a bit like cooked potatoes. The consistency is a bit harder on the outside and like soft meat on the inside. The taste is nutty and a bit meaty."

"With my design I am proposing a new lifestyle," the designer said. "It's about a potential new western culture of insect eating and breeding. It is really about making people see that there is a great variety of food on our planet that we rarely consider."

Unger explained that by 2050 meat production will need to increase by 50 percent to meet population increase, predicting that because we already use one third of croplands for the production of animal feed, it will be necessary to develop alternative food sources and production methods.

She added that her system so far uses just one out of 1000 edible insects in the world and she wants to develop the idea further in collaborations with manufacturers and researchers.

In the future, Unger plans to develop her farm further to support a greater variety of edible insects and possibly mass produce it as a consumer product. Of course, the most obvious hurdle for her fly-breeding device is convincing more people to eat insect larva, regardless of taste. That's a difficult concept for most Westerners to swallow under ideal circumstances, but especially when 500 grams of protein requires about 10,000 larva. On the other hand, insects do contain less calories than most sources of protein, so that could be a selling point.
