Echolocating App That Will Let To Map A Room With Sound

A LITTLE BROWN BAT IN FLIGHT ECHOLOCATING AT NIGHT
Bats, dolphins and even some blind people use echoes to create a mental 3D map of their environment and where they are in it. A smartphone's app could soon let us do the same.

Ivan Dokmanic and colleagues at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne have developed a system capable of reconstructing the shape of a room – and where you are in it - using echoes.

Human echolocators say  the trick behind this is sensing the strong early reflections off the walls, rather than the noisy, confusing mishmash of late-arriving, weaker echoes.

The EPFL team has developed a system capable of reconstructing the shape of a room using these "first order" echoes in order to computerise this process of 3D visualisation. To do this, the researchers wrote an echo-sorting algorithm which can discriminate between the first and later echoes.

To test their plan they set up a loudspeaker and five microphones in Lausanne cathedral. The speaker briefly emitted an audible chirp - sweeping from 200 hertz to 10 kilohertz - and the reflections were analysed to successfully reveal the cathedral's 3D shape and the location of the sound source.

Now the team wants to build an app that works using inaudible ultrasound to map interiors and tell people where they are in them. This would need multiple phones cooperating over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi in the building.

Dokmanic says that "At least four microphones are needed to ensure we robustly capture first order echoes and reject noise," .

Dokmanic, currently on secondment to Microsoft Research in Redmond, Washington, says the indoor localisation app should be ready in a year's time.

"To make an app which can listen to mobile phone speech and help you echolocate presents a huge number of challenges. In a crowded mall fellow shoppers would scatter and absorb echoes, while the chatty hubbub would mask the sound of the reflections."

Echo is a mobile app that connects you with your location though simple 140 character messages. when you open the app, echo automatically detects which city you are in and provides you with the most recent updates from echo users in that city. It's a great way to get local news discover events and interact with people around you.

The world's fastest electric racer Launched By Nissan at Le Mans

Nissan chooses Le Mans in France, home to one of the world’s most prestigious 24-hour races, to unveil its prototype electric speed racer, the ZEOD RC.

The Zero Emission On Demand Racing car is said to be capable of a top speed in excess of 300 kilometers per hour (186.4 miles per hour), is shaped a bit like the closed-cockpit version of the DeltaWing (albeit, to our eyes, better looking) and will make its debut in 2014 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This weekend, visitors to the race will have the opportunity to view the prototype near the Circuit de la Sarthe.

The ZEOD RC uses an electric-only system similar to Nissan’s Leaf Nismo RC. But where the Leaf Nismo RC only delivered 107 hp and a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph), the ZEOD RC is expected to be capable of speeds exceeding 300 km/h (186 mph). It has lightweight architecture and advanced aerodynamics.

Nissan will partner with French tire manufacturer Michelin to produce tires for the new prototype. Nissan previously joined forces with Michelin on the Nissan DeltaWing program. The Clermont-Ferrand-based manufacturer has an enviable record at the Le Mans 24 Hour, winning the past 15 consecutive races overall.

The Nissan ZEOD RC will make its testing debut later this summer. Nissan's assault on the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hour will again target victory in the P2 class with 15 of the 22 entries powered by Nissan. In the opening rounds of the 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship, Nissan has dominated, taking victory at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps.

Important Points :

1. Nissan ZEOD RC will utilize the same lithium battery technology as used in the award-winning Nissan
    LEAF.
2. The Nissan ZEOD RC will achieve speeds in excess of 300km/h.
3. Multiple electric drivetrain technologies to be tested before racing in 2014 Le Mans 24 Hour and assesed
    for potential in LM P1.
4. Nissan again at the forefront of Zero Emission and battery technology.

Indonesia To Create Artificial Rain To Extinguish Fires

An official said on Friday that Indonesia will drop salts into clouds to induce rain in an attempt to douse forest fires that have choked parts of the country and neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia.

Heru Widodo, the head of the government-run Weather Modification Technology Centre said that Two helicopters have been dispatched to Riau province on Sumatra island, where forest fires have raged for days.
He said, a C-130 Hercules cargo plane would follow on Saturday and also said that "We will start cloud seeding on Saturday, if the situation permits".
Cloud seeding involves firing salt-based chemicals into clouds to force out rain.
A similar method was used to try to divert rain away from the capital Jakarta following flooding in February.

A motorist is seen through a thick haze on a street in Muar in Malaysia's southern state of Johor bordering Singapore. In Malaysia, the southern state of Johor was the worst affected from forest fires in Indonesia. Air quality in the coastal town of Muar worsened in the "hazardous" category, forcing 211 schools to close.

Samsung Violated Apple's 'Bounce-Back' Patent By Japan Court

A Tokyo court ruled on Friday that Samsung Electronics Co Ltd had infringed rival Apple Inc's patent for a so-called bounce-back feature on earlier models of its popular smartphones.

The world's top two smartphone makers i.e. Samsung and Apple are fighting patent disputes across the globe as they compete to dominate the profitable mobile market and win customers with their latest gadgets and products.

Apple claimed that Samsung had copied the feature, in which icons on its smartphones and tablets quiver back when users scroll to the end of an electronic document. Samsung has already changed its interface on recent models to show a blue line at the end of documents.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark office judged earlier this year that Apple's bounce-back patent was invalid. The Japanese court's decision comes after this, allowing older Samsung models that had a similar feature to remain on sale.

According to documents filed by Apple in U.S. court last week, the U.S. agency subsequently decided that several aspects of the bounce-back feature were actually patentable.

Google's Person Finder app to help trace missing people : Uttarakhand flood

Search engine giant Google has launched an application "Person Finder" to offer information on missing people in flood-affected areas in the country, including Uttarakhand.

Google Person Finder is a web application that allows individuals to post and search for the status of relatives or friends affected by a disaster, Google said in a blogpost.

"Since last week, the state of Uttarakhand in India has been grappling with severe floods. Given that most of these areas in the state are highly inaccessible with intermittent communication, Google Crisis team bring you the Person Finder," the blog post by Jayanth Mysore, Google APAC Senior Product Manager, said.

The tool can help trace the missing people in flood-affected regions of Uttarakhand and is available in Hindi and English, it added. All data entered into Google Person Finder is available to the public and searchable by anyone. The programme also lets press agencies, non-governmental agencies and others contribute to the database and receive updates by using the Person Finder API based on the PFIF open standard.

Flash floods and landslides triggered by the monsoon fury left over 150 dead in calamity-hit Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, while thousands of pilgrims and locals are being rescued from various districts, including Rudraprayag and Chamoli.

50,000 people are still said to be stranded in various parts of Uttarakhand that was hit by cloudburst and floods. The calamity has ruined thousands of homes, rest houses and buildings.

The official death toll still stood at 150, but chief minister Vijay Bahuguna said the casualties could run into several hundreds which will be known only when areas become accessible and water recedes.

The state government's disaster mitigation and management centre had in the morning said that the causalities could run into thousands with about 90 dharamshalas (rest houses for pilgrims) swept away in the flash floods.

HTC Unveils 5-Inch Butterfly S Phablet

Taiwanese manufacturer HTChas globally unveiled its Butterfly S smartphone, which features technologies that were showcased earlier in its flagship handset HTC One. An upgrade to last year's top-end smartphone Butterfly, the new device has a faster processor, improved camera and offers 25GB of freeDropbox storage. The company has launched the handset only in Taiwan right now and has not revealed its global rollout plans.

The all-new Butterfly S has a 5-inch screen with1920x1080p resolution and 441ppi pixel density. The phone runs on the 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 processor (that powers the Samsung Galaxy S4) and comes with 2GB RAM. This device packs 16GB onboard storage and supports expansion up to 64GB via microSD cards.

HTC has included its UltraPixel technology in the 4MP rear camera of Butterfly S; the front camera of this handset has resolution of 2.1MP and a LED flash is placed on the back. Connectivity options in the phone include 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0 and NFC, front-facing BoomSound stereo speakers. The phone runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), topped with the manufacturer's proprietary Sense user interface.

HTC Butterfly S will compete against the new crop of phones with full HD screens, including Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z, LG Optimus G Pro and its sibling HTCOne. Other rivals are Apple iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 925 and BlackBerry Z10. Its predecessor, Butterfly, remains the most expensive Android phone in India at Rs 45,500.

The UltraPixel sensor is engineered with larger pixels, and it is touted to enable each pixel to capture more than 300 per cent more light than most leading 13 megapixel cameras. This is because the larger each pixel on the image sensor is, the more light it receives, and hence the image data becomes better.
