Firefox's New Interface

The majority of Mozilla Firefox users will get a new browser's interface and features  in 12 weeks from now. The project, code-named Australis, has been limited to Firefox's nightly builds, but adventurous fans can check out what's in the works with Friday's release of Firefox 29 Aurora.

 Moreover, Mozilla has created a more graphics-friendly interface that looks similar across all platforms. The main menu on Windows, Mac, and Linux is hidden behind an Android-style "three horizontal lines" icon, with Settings options given big, touch-friendly, and easily identifiable icons. The curve angles on desktop Firefox tabs look similar, if not identical, to the curve on Firefox for Android, further reinforcing the unified look.

For almost two years, the interface will be the most apparent change. On Windows and Linux, the orange Firefox button in the upper-left corner of the browser is gone, a hallmark since 2011's Firefox 4.

new Firefox Sync makes it easier to synchronize tabs, history, passwords, settings, and add-ons between Firefox browsers on both desktop and mobile..

The new Firefox Aurora simplifies the Firefox Sync log-in procedure by creating a new unified Mozilla account while offering the same end-to-end encryption.

Mozilla's chief technology officer, Brendan Eich, said that existing Firefox Sync users can disconnect one of their devices to force the creation of a new account, but that it wasn't necessary.

The redesign is expected to play a large role in Mozilla's ongoing struggle to parlay its desktop success.

"If people want to wait until the Beta, they could do that," he told CNET earlier this week, referencing the Firefox Beta that will ship with the new sync log-in six weeks from now.

Moreover, A Mozilla spokesperson said that the company isn't expecting a backlash like the one that followed Firefox 4 and its new rapid-release cycle, which changed the browser to update versions every six weeks, like Google Chrome.

There is little reason for existing Galaxy Note II users to upgrade to this model since both models have almost the same specs.The Galaxy Note II is also recently updated to Android 4.3 although there are some software issues that Samsung needs to iron out fast. 

The Galaxy Note 3 Neo will come in two variants: 

3G and 4G LTE

The latter will sport a hexa-core processor which consists of two 1.7GHz A15 cores and four 1.3GHz A7 cores, while the former will come with a quad-core 1.6GHz processor. Both models will be equipped with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage and a microSD card slot that supports up to 64GB.

Samsung basically repackaged the Galaxy Note II, threw in some new features and renamed the device as a "lite" version of the Galaxy Note 3. 

Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy Note 3 in global markets except the U.S and the U.K next month. 

The Galaxy Note 3 Neo will be available in three colors: white, black and green.

Solar, Motion Charging for iWatch

According to a story in Sunday's New York Times, Apple has been testing both solar and wireless charging for the rumored iWatch. This wireless charging method would involve magnetic induction.

This could conceivably involve the use of a charging plate.However, another method to juice up the watch may be to integrate a solar-charging layer in the screen.
Yet another involves "charging the battery through movement, a method that is already used in many modern watches," the Times reported. "A person's arm swinging could operate a tiny charging station that generates and pushes power to the device while walking." Apple filed a patent for the technology in 2009.
The impetus for alternatives to the traditional battery is rooted in the fact that a smart watch powered by a sophisticated processor would run out of juice too soon to entice consumers.
In the story, the Times cited Nest co-founder and "one of the fathers of the iPod" Tony Fadell, saying Apple tried for "many years" to build a smarter battery with, for example, solar charging but failed.

Facebook Partners with Cisco to offer free Wi-Fi Internet at Hotels

As said by Cisco Systems Inc and Facebook Inc on Wednesday that they will work with big businesses such as hotels and retailers to provide free wireless Internet access to consumers who sign in using a Facebook log-in.

Cisco Chief Executive Officer John Chambers, in a speech at the Interop technology conference in New York, said the system would allow retailers to deliver tailored promotions or information to consumers who check in through Facebook when they arrive at a store.

Rather than having to get the provider's Wi-Fi access code, a visitor to a coffee shop or a hotel, for example, could connect to the Wi-Fi system simply by logging onto Facebook and "checking in" to the business' Facebook page.

Cisco said some customers of its Connected Mobile Experience Wi-Fi technology are currently testing the system.

Facebook is joining arch-rival Google Inc in helping its users connect directly to the Internet, which increases the amount of time they spend on the companies' advertising-supported websites. This service also helps it forge closer relationships with corporations by providing the businesses anonymous demographic data about Facebook users coming through their doors.

Facebook is not funding the Wi-Fi effort, and merchants would pay for the network equipment and broadband costs.

Earlier this year, Google announced plans to bring free wireless Internet access to 7,000 Starbucks Corp cafes across the United States.

Cyanogen Raises $7 Million to help Transform Custom Android Firmware

According to TechCrunch, the startup has now raised $7 million from Benchmark Capital in hopes of turning this once hobby into a full-fledged business. Steve Kondik, Cyanogen’s cofounder, explained, “This is something that I kind of started for fun when the first generation of Android devices came out. But it just took off and snowballed. And soon people started giving me advice about features that they wanted.”

The real allure of the Cyanogen firmware is that it maintains the familiarity of the traditional Android software, while providing users with enhanced security, improved response speeds, and a slew of customizable features. The latest version of the mod includes a brand-new camera app, a better protected messaging system, and literally thousands of different themes.

A secondary advantage is that new 'experimental' versions are released on a daily basis, while more stable monthly builds are also available. In essence, Cyanogen Mod is an ongoing project, with updates denoting when bugs are worked out and new features are added. 

Their first plan of business is to address the aforementioned installation issues, developing a one-click installer for Windows. It's also speculated that Cyanogen will announce a partnership with a hardware manufacturer in about a week’s time. 

Finally, they want to start their rebranding effort with a name change – apparently the name “Cyanogen Mod” isn’t considered consumer-friendly.

Unfortunately, the complicated installation process has proved to be a major hindrance to Cyanogen’s success. It currently takes over an hour to successfully install the firmware, with one particular guide referencing the 23 different steps that are involved in the setup procedure.

Sony has announced a new Walkman device, and this new product may just be a must-have from music lovers on the go. The 3-in-1 WH series headphones look like a simple set of over-ear headphones, but the sleek design hides a built-in MP3 player as well as an external speaker. The device comes in two different models, a baseline NWZ-WH303 model and a high-end NWZ-WH505 model.

For the most part, the two versions of Sony’s new Walkman headphones are pretty much the same. Both are compatible with Mac and PC, both offer the same built-in stereo surround-sound speakers, and both boast 20 hours on a full charge. You’ll even get an hour of battery life after just three minutes of charging. However, the WH505 offers 16GB of music storage, enough for about 4,000 songs, while the WH303 is restricted to 4GB or about 1,000 tracks. The WH505 also offers a slightly better bass with its 40mm headphone driver unit, compared to 30mm version found on the WH303.

Sony hasn’t revealed how much the new headphones will cost or when they might be available, though we guess they’ll hit stores in the next month or so, just in time for the holidays.

New ASUS PadFone Infinity To Launch On Sept. 17

Asus finally confirmed the rumors today, unveiling a Web site and short YouTube video to promote the updated PadFone Infinity. The refreshed smartphone-tablet hybrid will launch next week on Sept. 17 at a special event hosted by CEO Jerry Shen in Taipei.

We already have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the new device. The updated PadFone will likely boast a Snapdragon 800 processor, a microSD slot, a noise canceling microphone, and come in black and white models. The Padfone Infinity is expected to sport a full-HD display with 1080x1920 pixels resolution; however there is no word about the size of the display, yet. The tablet is codenamed PadFone T004 and runs on Android 4.2.2. The device is likely to include expandable storage and a noise-cancelling microphone.

The refreshed A86 model offers the same dimensions and design as the current A80, and will likely fit right into its accompanying tablet. Asus continues to roll out new versions of the PadFone, a smartphone that can power up a special Android slate by sliding into a slot in the back.

It’s also mentioned the price may fall, which probably isn’t a bad thing, as you’ll pay 1000 euros (that’s $1325) for one at the moment. Asus justifies the price by saying it’s less than buying an equivalent phone and tablet separately, but in these days of Nexus 7/Nexus 4 match ups, it’s tough to swallow.

However, before getting too excited, as the event is being held in Taipei, it could indicate we’ll have to wait for the new Padfone Infinity’s release outside of the region. It could also be the reason it didn’t include the new device in its IFA 2013 line-up.
